The “U-boat trap” was a not very successful tactic employed by the Royal Navy in the First World War and which was abandoned after the sinking of HM Submarine C29 on 29th August, 1915. A decoy trawler was used to tow a submarine and when a German U-boat was seen, the tow line was cast off and the submarine would attack the U-boat. Unfortunately for C29, her trawler Ariadne, towed her into a minefield in the Humber estuary where she hit a mine and sank with the loss of all her crew.
